Black Walnut Toxicity
Black walnut trees produce a natural chemical called juglone, which is released into the soil through their roots, leaves, and fallen debris. Juglone can be toxic to many plants, causing stunted growth, wilting, or even death in sensitive species that grow too close to the tree. However, some plants are naturally tolerant of black walnut toxicity and can thrive nearby without issue. Choosing juglone-tolerant trees, shrubs, perennials, and groundcovers is essential when planting near black walnuts to ensure a healthy, thriving landscape.
**This list was formed using several sources and our own observations. Due to the endless number of variables and plant cultivars there is no way to know for sure if a particular plant will grow near a black walnut
